1. What is a picosecond laser?
A laser that emits pulses in the picosecond range — one trillionth of a second. For context, a nanosecond is to a picosecond what a meter is to a millimeter. That extreme speed changes the physics of how the laser works, and that’s the entire point of the technology.
2. How does picosecond technology work?
Ultra-short pulses create a photo-mechanical effect — a pressure wave — instead of a photo-thermal one. The pigment or ink absorbs the pulse, expands violently, and shatters into fine fragments the lymphatic system clears. Because energy is delivered before heat spreads, surrounding tissue stays cool: less damage, faster recovery, fewer sessions. It’s blasting a rock into dust versus slowly heating it until it cracks.
3. Picosecond vs Q-Switch (nanosecond): what’s the difference?
Q-Switch lasers rely mostly on photothermal action — they heat pigment and the skin around it. Picosecond lasers use that mechanical shockwave, breaking ink into much finer particles that clear faster. Practically: fewer sessions on tattoos, better results on stubborn colors, less thermal risk. That’s why pico became the standard for tattoo and pigment work. (We compared both in detail.)
4. What can a picosecond laser treat?
More than you’d think: tattoo removal (all ink types, eyeliner, lip line), epidermal spots (freckles, coffee spots, seborrheic keratosis), dermal spots (Nevus of Ota, birthmarks), mixed pigmentation like chloasma, acne scars, wrinkles, skin rejuvenation, and carbon peel for deep cleansing. 5. How many tattoo removal sessions are needed?
With pico, typical tattoo courses drop from 5–10 sessions (the Q-Switch era) to 2–4 sessions for most designs. Exact counts depend on ink density, colors, tattoo age, and skin type — but the session reduction is the headline improvement of the technology. (We wrote about the session math here.)
6. Does picosecond work on all tattoo colors?
Different colors absorb different wavelengths, so a single-wavelength machine will always turn some tattoos away. Ours carries four: 1064nm for dark ink and deep pigment, 532nm for colorful and red-orange ink, 755nm for greens and blues via the honeycomb probe, and 1320nm for rejuvenation and whitening. Three treatment heads, four wavelengths — that combination lets you say yes to almost any tattoo walk-in.

7. Is picosecond laser treatment painful?
Most patients describe a rubber-band snap, stronger than IPL but shorter. Numbing cream is standard for sensitive areas, and the treatment is over quickly because each pulse does more work. The honeycomb probe disperses the beam across a focused grid, protecting the skin and making sessions more comfortable.
8. How long is the recovery?
Typically a few days of mild redness and pinpoint crusting — and because the effect is mechanical rather than thermal, healing is generally faster than with older lasers. One advantage we list on the spec sheet: no melanin precipitation, meaning less risk of post-inflammatory pigment changes.
9. What is the honeycomb (755nm) probe for?
The 755nm honeycomb probe uses a focused-lens grid that creates micro-vacuoles in the skin — a controlled “vacuolization” effect. It breaks melanin into fine, dispersed particles while protecting the surface: great for pigmentary issues and skin revitalization. It’s the probe that turns a tattoo machine into a skin-rejuvenation machine.
10. What is PTP mode and why does chloasma need it?
PTP (pulse-to-pulse) mode fires paired pulses that split the energy, making treatment gentler and safer — developed for stubborn, sensitive pigmentation like chloasma (melasma), where aggressive single pulses risk rebound pigmentation. It’s one of four built-in modes, alongside pico tattoo, long-pulse hair removal, and carbon peel.
11. What is carbon peel (black face doll)?
Carbon peel spreads medical-grade carbon lotion over the face, then the laser zaps it — the carbon heats, vaporizes, and pulls out impurities while the pulse polishes the skin. It shrinks pores, brightens tone, reorganizes collagen, and it’s fast, comfortable, low-risk, and highly repeatable: one of the best recurring-revenue treatments a clinic can add.

12. What power and energy specs should I look for?
The numbers that matter: output power (ours is 3000W), maximum focus energy (2000mJ), adjustable spot size (2–10mm), and frequency (1–10Hz). A wider adjustable range means fine lines at a small spot with low energy, dense tattoos at a large spot with high energy — on the same machine. Fixed-range machines force compromises.
13. What makes a picosecond laser “medical grade”?
Component quality, mostly. Ours uses an imported Φ8mm laser rod, a German Heraeus light source, a British imported xenon lamp, and a Taiwan Mean Well power supply — the same supply brand used in medical devices worldwide. Components are the difference between a machine that holds its output for years and one that drifts after months.
14. Why do the laser arm and optics matter?
Every percent of light lost in delivery is energy your client doesn’t receive. Our machine uses a South Korean 7-joint articulated arm with a 45° mirror rated above 95% beam transmission and 360° rotation — the beam stays stable however you position it. A cheap arm drops energy, slows treatment, and produces uneven results. You can’t see it in a photo, but you feel it in every session.
15. How long does a picosecond machine last?
The articulated arm is rated for unlimited shots over full lifetime use, and the power train is built around the Heraeus lamp and Mean Well supply — components chosen for longevity. We back ours with a 2-year warranty and free technical service, and the water + air + TEC triple cooling keeps internals running cool under daily load.
16. What certifications should it have?
At minimum, CE certification for medical devices — ours carries CE alongside our factory’s ISO 13485, medical CE, ROHS, and FDA certifications. Ask for the certificate numbers and verify them; a factory that can’t show its paperwork is a factory you shouldn’t be importing from.
17. How do I vet a picosecond laser manufacturer?
Don’t compare brochures — ask them to walk you through their after-sales process, then ask for three clinics that have bought from us and will talk to you, and put the warranty terms on paper. 18. What ongoing costs should I expect?
Beyond consumables you choose (like carbon lotion for peels), the honest list is: lamp/rod replacement when the source eventually ages, and routine care of the cooling circuit. This is where design shows up — a large-capacity ABS water tank with fast flow and a big bellows cooling system means internals run cooler and last longer. 19. How many service lines can one pico machine support?
Count them: tattoo removal, pigmentation, acne scars, skin rejuvenation, carbon peel, and even long-pulse hair removal — our machine has a dedicated hair-removal mode, so it pulls double duty. Tattoo removal is high-ticket and package-based; carbon peel is high-frequency and repeatable; pigment work builds a loyal clientele. That’s a revenue structure most single-function machines can’t offer.
